How to Get a Free Breast Pump Through Insurance with Aeroflow (+ Motif Duo Pump Giveaway)

The following post about breastfeeding and breast pumps is sponsored and written by the folks at Motif Medical. This topic is near to my heart as a struggling breastfeeding first-time mom and exclusive pumper after my son’s nursing strike. I also used Aeroflow to obtain a free breast pump through my insurance in 2014 (so I can confirm that this is legit!).

According to the CDC, breastfeeding rates have steadily increased over the last few years, and it’s no surprise why since there are many health benefits for mom and baby. But while there are high breastfeeding initiation rates, the breastfeeding rates drop among infants at 3 and 6 months.

These dropping rates show the importance of National Breastfeeding Month to “build support for the policy and practice changes needed to build a ‘landscape of breastfeeding support.’”

Aeroflow is dedicated to increasing the rates of breastfeeding in the United States by promoting access to breastfeeding support, supplies, and services for all families One way we do this is by helping moms receive maximum reimbursement for a breast pump through insurance.

To commemorate National Breastfeeding Month, we’ve partnered with Motif Medical who wants to support your breastfeeding journey with a giveaway of one of their brand new pumps – the Motif Duo – so be sure to enter once you’re done reading this post.

How To Obtain Your Free Breast Pump through Insurance

Do You Qualify for a Free Breast Pump Through Insurance?

An electric breast pump can help support breastfeeding. The most common reason a mom uses a breast pump is to return to work and continue to provide breast milk for her baby. But that’s not all. If a baby has difficulty latching, a breast pump can help to maintain a mom’s milk supply. If a mom worries she is under producing, a breast pump can help increase her production.

Because of these benefits, the ACA requires insurance to cover the cost of a breast pump. Filing an insurance claim can be a pain. Contacting an insurance agent, navigating the various call menus, collecting and collating the paperwork are all a pain.

We’ve made that process as easy as possible.

Get Your Pump Through Insurance

1. Sign up online

The process starts with the simple qualify through insurance form. All you need to do is provide some basic information like your contact information, baby’s due date, and your primary insurance info. We’ll handle the rest!

2. Chat with You Breastpump Specialist

Unlike your insurance agency, we have dedicated Breastpump Specialist that ensure you get maximum reimbursement AND helps you find the right pump. Some insurance agents only know of the one insurance pump offered.

After your Breastpump Specialist verifies your insurance coverage, she’ll request a breast pump prescription for your doctor and submits the required paperwork to your insurance.

3. Pick a pump

You’ll first want to decide on a manual or electric pump. We always suggest a double electric pump. A manual pump is an ideal secondary or backup pump. Because of the strain it puts on your hand, it would be tiring to use for each pump session.

Your insurance plan will (probably) cover an electric pump. Aeroflow carries double electric pumps that can also be used as a single electric pump. Your Breastpump Specialist will explain the different electric pumps you qualify for and how they differ.

Some things to consider are how often you will pump, the size of the pump, its power source, the suction power, and noise level.

  • Pump Size – An easy way to understand the size of the pump is what bag you carry the pump in. None of the pumps are heavy but some require larger bags to conveniently carry. For the larger pumps or if you’re commuting with your breast pump every day, a breast pump bag makes for an essential accessory.
  • Suction Power – Each pump has enough suction to express breast milk. A mom would need a more powerful pump if she plans to exclusively pump and/or is returning to work or school. The more powerful pump can hold up for longer over a longer time period. The Motif, Spectra and Evenflo would be ideal. If a mom will be able to nurse her baby the majority of time and only needs the pump to supplement, suction power isn’t as important to consider. We do suggest first time moms consider a stronger pump because she won’t know what her milk supply will be like. A strong pump can help encourage her milk supply.
  • Noise Level – If you’re returning to work or going back to school, you might worry about the noise levels. Is it quiet enough for a conference all? Will my coworkers know when I’m pumping? None of the pumps are loud, but you might hear your pump talking to you. The Motif Duo & The Spectra S2 are by far the quietest pumps.

4. Determine if You Want to Upgrade

Insurance companies cover only what is considered “medically necessary.” Medically necessary is simply expressing milk. Aeroflow Breastpumps has contracted rates with various insurance companies.

Your insurance plan could entitle you to an upgrade at little to no cost. An upgrade could include additional storage bottles, additional power options, or bag.

5. Consider Supplies & Accessories

Because insurance only covers what is “medically necessary,” you might consider purchasing a few accessories to help, but it can be difficult to know what you really need. We’ve heard moms value extra storage options, a hands-free bra, and nipple care.

Most moms need extra bottles and storage bags. Without extras, you’ll spend an overwhelming amount of time hunched over the kitchen sink cleaning bottles and shields. Some women experience nipple pain during breastfeeding. This can be treated by skin therapy solutions with all natural ingredients that nourish the skin.

If you’re returning to work or school, a breast pump bag is a great storage option. Most have separate storage sections that will keep your breast pump accessories away from your keys, wallet, and laptop. If you don’t plan to spend time away from your baby and have a small pump, you might not need a breast pump bag.
